Für die taubenBeethoven was one of the best composers of his time. Not everyone appreciated his music, but we can all agree that he composed pieces of great quality, some of which are still very popular nowadays (think of Für Elise).
One group who could certainly not appreciate his music were the deaf. Quite ironically, Beethoven was known to be hearing impaired himself (this may or may not have had influence on his music pieces or his incapability to understand people in general). |
I wanted to show Beethoven through his vulnerability, through his flaws. That is why I dressed him in old man's clothes, using by granddad as the perfect model.
His outfit includes a broadly striped polo, socks in sandals and a long trenchcoat which almost suits Beethoven´s long robes. In his hands he is fidgeting with his hearing aid, trying to get it to work properly. The statue is dedicated to the Greater Los Angeles Agency of the Deaf and could possibly inspire people with a disability that they can do anything. |
