People often say that pictures say more than a thousand words. This is absolutely true and we experience this every day. Just think about how often you read your holiday diary from 3 years ago versus how often you look at that one picture at the beach with your brother. Something else that almost everyone does, is taking pictures of the extraordinary things in life. Think of holidays, family gatherings, a day trip to the sea. We don't photograph the things we do daily, since they are normal to us. Like we will remember them anyway without having to take a photo of it. However, in the end, these 'normal, regular things' you did in Helmond turn out to be more important than that one day you spent in Amsterdam. |
I took various photos of my daily, weekly, or regular life and decided to go with the one I think has the strongest meaning to me.
The one above 'won'. It is the view I have every Monday at a quarter past four in the afternoon. On Monday, my cousins, my brother and I spend the afternoon at my grandparents and have dinner there. We do homework together, set the table, and drink chocolate milk or Capri Sun from the fridge in the scullery. I always feel happy and a sense of warmth whey I see these bikes standing in line, in the order of who arrived first (which is always the same).
I tried to show the warmth I feel when I see this image, which is why the image is light and a little tinted towards an orange-brown spectrum. I like the fact that the bikes are in order of dark-light-dark-light, although I didn't place them this way on purpose. It gives the image a little playful and relaxed touch, which is exactly the vibe that runs through the house of my grandparents every Monday.

The runner up in my small contest was this picture. I took it in the gymnastics centre in Helmond after the Clubkampioenschappen. I like this photo a lot since it displays the exact feelings that come back Every. Single. Competition. On the one hand, everyone is happy about what they achieved but also the nerves that have been alarmingly high all day come flooding out, as you can see with the girl in the centre-right. The photo shows the kids I train every Saturday and you can see the team vibe, even though gymnastics is not a team sport. The younger kids had their competition in the morning and waited for the older ones to do theirs and came running in, screaming, to congratulate the winner. I felt so proud and it is a great addition to all the memories I have to the gym hall.

The 'bronze medal' goes to this picture, which is one of the Mondays I described above. We always eat early, at five p.m., since we all have to leave quite soon afterwards to go sporting or to work. The meal is also quite typical for my grandparents who like to prepare potatoes matched with some kind of vegetable and (often) a meatball. My cousin on the right is vegetarian and eats a substitute which we often partly steal from her.
At this table we discuss our days and we can visually see our grandparents being interested in our stories and grateful for us being there. |
